Week 1: The Search For A Domain

Updated: Nov 20, 2020

The first step in the way to solve a problem is to find the domain, in which a problem occurs. After our first group meeting, we chose 3 potential domains: Job seeking & Recruitment Processes, Environment & Recycling, and Smart Consumption.

As we tried to decide which domain should we focus on, we conducted interviews with experts in each domain and tried to understand what are the biggest challenges in each of every one of them. The Smart Consumption domain was broad and we spoke with different experts from various fields. The field we found the most relatable was news consumption - how to make news consumption more democratic and objective. That is the domain we chose.

As a part of the interviews under the domain of news consumption, we interviewed Yael Lavie, a 26 years international journalist and a lecturer at the IDC school of communications. The interview focused on the challenges of consuming news from different media organizations: political or ideological bias of every news organization and the lack of awareness of this bias by the consumers. The main points that came up during the interview:

  • The majority of people consume their news from apps and social media platforms. Therefore, they are influenced by a few similar opinions. Facebook, for instance, is customizing the user's content to its political tendency - the user is only exposed to his agenda.

  • Lavie claims that it is our duty as a democratic country to expose the public to a variety of ideologies and opinions.

  • Our target audience should focus on the ages between 18-24, when the political opinion is not fully formed, they are not identified with a specific media organization and they are more open to hearing different opinions.
